Itinerary for the Great Ocean Road Trip
Embark on the celebrated Great Ocean Road tour, a quintessential journey in Victoria. Anticipate the day we unveil the splendour of this coastal route, encompassing unspoiled beaches, lush rainforests, and dramatic limestone cliffs.
Marvel at the 12 Apostles – these majestic natural pillars stand offshore in Victoria’s Port Campbell National Park. Immerse yourself in the breathtaking landscape and listen as our guides share tales and historical insights about this magnificent shoreline.
Depart Melbourne
Departing Melbourne, our route takes us to the Surf Coast, meandering through picturesque coastal villages like Anglesea, Lorne, and Airey’s Inlet. We’ll pause for morning refreshments, savouring the ocean breeze and watching surfers ride the waves. Learn about the area’s surfing excellence and the necessity of wetsuits due to its closeness to Antarctica!
Exploring the Rainforest in Great Otway National Park
Continuing on the Great Ocean Road, our journey ascends into the verdant hills of the Great Otway National Park. We travel amidst towering Eucalyptus trees until reaching a serene, Cool, Temperate Rainforest section. The shift in the landscape is striking as we stroll among tree ferns and admire the ‘time-honored relics’ – the Myrtle Beach trees, offering lush canopy shade and dating back to the time when Australia was part of the ancient supercontinent Gondwanaland.
The Great Ocean Road Memorial Arch
We’ll visit the Great Ocean Road monument, signifying the road’s commencement point. Capture memories at the famed Memorial Arch, learn about the soldiers who constructed this road in honour of their comrades, and enjoy the breathtaking vistas along our journey (with plenty of photo opportunities, of course!)
Search for wild koalas and native birds
Throughout our trip, we’ll seek out Koalas along the Great Ocean Road tour, observing them in their natural habitat. While their exact location can’t be promised, our experienced guides will lead us to prime spots in the wilderness to potentially find these serene creatures resting.
Pause for Lunch in Apollo Bay
We allocate time for a refreshing lunch stop in Apollo Bay (lasting around 45 minutes – costs are borne by the guests). After you’ve taken the opportunity to discover Apollo Bay, whether it’s purchasing souvenirs, savouring some delightful ice cream, or just exploring, we reboard the bus and proceed towards the inland Great Otway National Park.
Visiting the Twelve Apostles
Emerging from the forest and returning to the Southern Ocean’s edge, we enter the Port Campbell National Park, the site of the famed 12 Apostles. Here, we spend about 40 minutes, giving you ample free time to absorb the vistas from various perspectives, stroll the boardwalks, and capture stunning photos of this wild, jagged coastline.
Loch Ard Gorge and Shipwreck Coast
Further within the National Park, we venture to Loch Ard Gorge, the location of one of Australia’s most notorious shipwrecks. Listen to the thrilling story of Tom and Eva, then descend to the beach to explore the caves. This area also has impressive rock structures like the Island Archway, Razorback, and the ‘Salt and Pepper Shakers’.
